We drive   the sustainable growth of the aluminium can    usage at Brazil.

1989 1989

A milestone in Brazilian history has been reached: the inauguration of the first aluminum can factory in the country, in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais.

Latasa started the national production of a package that, over time, would become a symbol of practicality, innovation and recycling.

Thus began the story of the cans that would accompany Brazilians for so many years.

2003 2003

In March 2003, a new chapter was written.

Aluminum can manufacturers have joined forces to create Abralatasan association with a clear purpose: to strengthen the sector and promote the development of a more competitive production chain.

There, a voice was born that would defend sustainability and recycling throughout Brazil.

2005 2005

Two years later, in 2005, Abralatas lived up to its mission by actively participating in the debates on the National Solid Waste Policy.

Their contribution was decisive in valuing the work of waste picker cooperatives and establishing an efficient reverse logistics model.

Showing that every recycled can is a step towards a more sustainable future.

2010 2010

The year 2010 brought a transformative initiative: the Abralatas Debate Cycle.

Bringing together industry representatives, waste pickers, governments and experts, these meetings have become an arena for ideas to tackle the challenges of recycling and propose innovative solutions for the production chain.

2012 2012

In 2012, the sector celebrated an impressive milestone: more than 20 billion aluminum cans were produced in Brazil in just one year.

It was confirmation of the positive impact of packaging on the market.

Which also accumulated the historic mark of 200 billion units manufactured since that pioneering day in 1989.

2014 2014

A Abralatas continued to make history in 2014 with its participation in the approval of the packaging sector agreement.

This achievement reinforced the role of cooperatives in the recycling cycle.

Ensuring that every stage, from consumption to reuse, is valued and integrated.

2021 2021

And then, in 2021, came a project that won hearts and minds: the Every Can Counts program.

Inspired by the success of “Every Can Counts” in Europe, the initiative landed in Brazil with the aim of raising awareness and getting Brazilians involved in the habit of recycling cans.

Showing that small actions can change the world.

2022 2022

Brazilian record for recycling aluminum beverage cans: 100%!

One of the sector’s greatest achievements.

2023 2023

The Brazilian aluminum beverage can sector is now part of the largest corporate sustainability initiative on the planet: the UN Global Compact.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary at a major event in Brasilia (DF), Abralatas celebrated the milestone of 30 members and the approval of the Tax Reform, with provisions that have steered Brazil towards a low-carbon model. Work led by the association and the Parliamentary Front for the Green Economy.

Abralatas receives the Recyclable Materials Collectors’ Friendly Entity Award, during the program of the 10th Expocatadores in Brasília (DF).

The Carnival of Rio de Janeiro’s samba schools enters the Guinness Book of Records as the event with the highest recycling of aluminum cans in the world.

2024 2024

Abralatas and the G20 have entered into a partnership to supply water in aluminum cans during the meetings of the G20 delegations and the major Summit event.

The aim of the initiative was to replace plastic bottles with 100,000 cans of mineral water, highlighting sustainability and the circular economy.

From 1989 to today, this trajectory reflects the constant commitment to strengthening our sector.

Each stage of this journey was built with the collective effort of various players, showing that positive impact is only possible when industry, society and the environment work together.
