Brazilian spring water in a personalized can will be offered at the G20 meetings until November in Brazil
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), through the G20 National Logistics Coordination, and the Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas) have concluded an unprecedented partnership, which will offer a sustainable solution for water consumption at the G20 meetings taking place until November 2024. During the upcoming meetings, which are taking place in various cities across the country, and also at the G20 Summit of Heads of State and Government, to be held in November in Rio de Janeiro, aluminum cans will replace the usual plastic bottles that serve water to the participants in the discussions.
In total, there will be 100,000 units of mineral water from the Brazilian source of Águas de Lindóia/SP, in personalized 350ml aluminum cans. The packaging is a universal symbol of the circular economy. It can be fully recycled, infinitely, and has the lowest average carbon and water footprint of all beverage packaging. In addition, it contributes to income generation among the most vulnerable population and, consequently, to reducing social inequality, one of the priority issues in the discussions of the G20 Working Groups.
Brazil stands out worldwide when it comes to recycling aluminum cans, achieving very expressive rates year after year and maintaining an average of over 97% in the last 10 years, avoiding the emission of 16 million tons of greenhouse gases. For comparison’s sake, European countries recycle an average of 76% and the United States 60% of cans. In addition, recycling aluminum cans saves 5,000 Ghz of energy per year, or the equivalent of 1% of the total consumed in Brazil.
According to the president of Abralatas, Cátilo Cândido, the initiative is unprecedented and sets a positive precedent for canned water to become a reality at events around the world. “Canned water showed impressive growth in Brazil, with sales up 303% between January and June this year compared to the same period last year,” he explained. “Seeing canned water gaining ground at an event of the magnitude of the G20 shows that we are on the right track, presenting aluminum cans to the world as a truly conscious option that preserves the environment,” said Cátilo.
Sustainability is Brazil’s priority at the G20
The Group of Twenty is the main forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an important role in defining and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international political and economic issues. Brazil’s presidency of the G20 began on December 1, 2023 and runs until November 30, 2024. In addition to 19 countries from five continents, the forum also includes the European Union and the African Union. The group accounts for two-thirds of the world’s population, around 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade.
Promoting sustainable, fair and inclusive development is one of the three priorities of Brazil’s presidency of the G20, a country that has the most renewable energy matrix among the world’s largest economies. The fight against hunger, poverty and inequality and the reform of global governance are the other priority issues being addressed at the Group’s meetings.
