ABNT NBR 17194, published by ABNT in partnership with Abralatas, will provide the Brazilian market with the highest quality standard for aluminum cans
The aluminum beverage can sector now has its first NBR. With this, Brazil becomes the first country in the world to have a technical quality standard endorsed by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), which guarantees even more safety and confidence for those who work with and consume beverages in aluminum cans.
The ABNT NBR 17194 standard published on Monday (4/11) deals with basic concepts, defines the visual, dimensional and functional characteristics of aluminum cans and specifications for transporting, handling, storing and even filling beverages. These are requirements, procedures, recommendations and precautions that ensure the highest quality standards in terms of beverage packaging.
The world’s most sustainable packaging is present in the daily lives of Brazilians. More than 30 billion units are consumed every year, or 3,000 per second, in various shapes and sizes. From mineral water to traditional beer, industry, commerce and consumers now have even more reasons to choose their favorite drink in an aluminum can.
“The standard is the result of the sector’s work to seek excellence in everything it does. By defining high quality standards for aluminum cans, we guarantee even greater confidence and security for our entire production chain. “The Brazilian can has just completed 35 years in Brazil, and it is important that we have this instrument, such as the NBR, which guarantees security for our growth in the country, without giving up the high quality of what we offer society,” explains Cátilo Cândido, executive president of the Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas).
“The publication of the standard represents a milestone for our sector, which is expanding rapidly and moving every day to improve its processes. The NBR for aluminium beverage cans is the result of the union of the best practices of companies in the sector,” says Cátilo.
According to the president of ABNT, Mario William Esper, the supply of safe, reliable, sustainable and standardized beverage packaging is fundamental for contemporary society. “By publishing the ABNT NBR 17194 series of standards, we are offering benefits such as increasing customer confidence by improving product quality, as well as contributing to the country’s economy by reducing waste, adopting waste circularity and organizing the market. ABNT constantly monitors market innovations so that its Brazilian Standards are always in line with the latest practices,” said the president.
THE NBR
It is a voluntary and public standard that standardizes processes for the good of society. It stipulates technical guidelines whose function is to standardize processes for the production of products and services in Brazil.
The NBRs are developed publicly in a democratic, transparent, neutral and
objective manner by ABNT in a collaborative way and cooperate to establish high
production standards.
